The Sombre Sonnet

I make no promise that I cannot keep,
And keeping them is harder than it seems,
But when a challenge, my way, comes to creep,
I’ll fight it for you, here in life or dreams.
Sometimes these trials seem more than we can bear,
Sometimes direction takes its toll too far,
While consequences of this world aren’t fair,
I’ll hide my hands while you return a scar.
Reminders on my face and soul alike,
I’ll cherish them, and not forget, I know,
I’ll elevate my heart upon a pike,
Remembering we reap that which we sew.
I sew now love into thy gentle frame,
And wait for seasons to return the same.
